How To Clear Recently Played Spotify

Clearing your recently played Spotify list can be useful for several reasons, whether you’re trying to remove evidence of your guilty pleasure songs or simply want to start fresh with your music history. The process to clear your recently played songs on Spotify is relatively straightforward, but the steps can vary depending on whether you’re using the mobile app or the desktop application. Here’s how you can do it on both platforms:
For Mobile Devices (iOS and Android):
Open the Spotify App: First, you need to open the Spotify app on your mobile device. Make sure you’re running the latest version to ensure these steps work as described.
Navigate to Your Library: Tap on the “Library” tab at the bottom right corner of your screen. This is where you’ll find all your saved music, including playlists, artists, and albums.
Find the “Recently Played” Section: In the Library tab, you’ll see a list of sections including “Playlists,” “Artists,” “Albums,” etc. Look for the “Recently Played” section. It might be further down the list.
Clear Recent Play History: Unfortunately, as of my last update, Spotify doesn’t directly offer an option to clear the “Recently Played” list in the app. However, you can influence what appears here by playing different music or by removing items from your “Listen History” in the “Home” tab, though this doesn’t directly clear the list.
Alternative Method - Log Out and Back In: Sometimes, logging out of the app and then logging back in can refresh the “Recently Played” list, though this method is not foolproof and might not completely clear the list.
For Desktop:
Open Spotify: Launch the Spotify application on your computer.
Go to Your Library: Similar to the mobile app, click on “Library” in the sidebar to the left. This will take you to your music collection.
Find “Recently Played”: In the Library view, look for the “Recently Played” section. It should be visible under the sections like “Playlists,” “Artists,” etc.
Right-Click to Clear: Unlike the mobile app, the desktop version provides a bit more flexibility. Right-click on any item in the “Recently Played” list, and you’ll see options including “Remove fromRecently Played.” Selecting this will remove the item from your list.
Clearing Entire List: Unfortunately, as with the mobile app, there’s no direct option to clear the entire “Recently Played” list at once on the desktop. You can right-click and remove items individually, which can be time-consuming if you want to clear the whole list.
Additional Tips:
- Private Sessions: If you want to listen to music without it appearing in your “Recently Played” list, you can use Spotify’s “Private Session” feature. This doesn’t clear the list but prevents new items from being added during the session. To activate, go to “Settings” (gear icon) > “Social” > toggle “Private Session” on.
- Deleting Account Data: In extreme cases, or if you’re planning to leave Spotify, you can request your account data to be deleted, which includes play history. However, this is a more drastic measure and should be considered carefully.
Spotify regularly updates its features and user interface, so it’s possible that direct options to clear the “Recently Played” list might be introduced in the future. Always check the latest version of the app or software for the most current capabilities.
